-
- from the front cover of the 4-page brochuere, "SILICON STUDIO, Third Party
- Solutions for Film & Video Production", handed out during SIGGRAPH '93:
-
- Silicon Studio is a professional film and video production system based
- on Silicon Graphics workstations, specialized video options and
- third-party software solutions. For years, SGI machines have been used
- to produce special effects for movies such as "Terminator 2", "The Abyss",
- "Death Becomes Her", and "Jurassic Park". Now the Silicon Graphics
- Silicon Studio environment provides similar benefits to all aspects of
- the film and video production process.
- Professional film and video producers are in the process of replacing
- single-purpose "black boxes" with multipurpose production systems. As
- the premier multipurpose production environment, Silicon Studio
- provides these advantages over single-purpose solutions:
-
- * Low-cost Production System. Silicon Graphics' family of products
- provides the flexibility to create a film production system at a
- wide variety of price points.
- * Increased Equipment Flexibility/Longer Life. Silicon Studio is an
- open computer-based production environment. This means capabilities
- can be augmented through software applications and peripherals --
- virtually eliminating the obsolescence so common with other
- single-purpose closed systems. Using the same computer for many
- different applications during its life and selectively upgrading
- provides lower lifetime costs and a greater return on investment.
- * Easy to Integrate. Silicon Studio solutions are format compatible
- with current standards and connect easily to Video Tape Recorders
- (VTR's), Digital Video Effect (DVE) machines, Apple Computer's
- Macintosh computers, PC's and a variety of specialized production
- equipment. Consequently, Silicon Graphics solutions can be
- integrated into an environment one piece at a time.
- * Flexible Tools. The integration of Silicon Studio applications
- allows easy exchange and sharing of data as well as access to more
- than one application at a time. This is helpful when a person in
- one production suite needs to make changes that would ordinarily be
- handled in another suite.
-
- Silicon Studio Software Solutions from third-party developers transform
- Silicon Graphics computers into Silicon Studio film and video production
- systems.

- [5 sstr*.ps files]: "Silicon Studio Technical Report", covers video and
- compression products. Unfortunately, we were not able to
- take the frame documents and successfully create a single
- PostScript document, so the next best thing is the 5 files
- that together comprise the complete report. Although not
- *the* FINAL, completely-formalized report, this is a very
- close-to-finalized draft, which, because of time
- constraints with the schedule of the Toolbox, is the best
- we could provide at this time. The following is taken from
- the introductory Product Overview segment of each of the
- four sections:
- sstrTOC.ps:
- Table of Contents page
- sstrGV.ps:
- * Gailieo Video Technical Report:
- Gailieo Video(tm) is a video option for the Iris
- Indigo(tm), XS, XS24, XS24Z, XZ, Elan(tm) and
- Indigo^2(tm) desktop workstations. It provides
- cost-effective, high-quality video input and output
- in NTSC and PAL timings.
- sstrIndyVid.ps:
- * Indy/Indigo^2 Video Techincal Report:
- Indy/Indigo^2 Video(tm) is a video option for the
- Indy(tm) and Indigo^2(tm) desktop workstations. It
- provides cost-effective, high-quality video input and
- output in NTSC and PAL timings.
- sstrCC.ps:
- * Cosmo Compress Techincal Report:
- Cosmo Compress(tm) is an option used in conjunction
- with Indy Video, Indigo^2 Video and Galileo Video. It
- provides compression and decompression of incoming and
- outgoing video to the CCITT/ISO JPEG standard.
- sstrSV.ps:
- * Sirius Video Technical Report:
- Sirius Video(tm) is a video option for SGI workstations
- equipped with RealityEngine(tm), RealityEngine^2(tm) or
- VTX graphics. It fully integrates broadcast-quality
- video with Silicon Graphcs supercomputer graphics
- capabilities. Sirius Video may also be installed in
- CHALLENGE(tm) servers and POWERSeries(tm) server
- configurations, making its broadcast-quality video a
- network resource.
